Mary Spencer is the President and founder of The Spencer Company, one of the largest contract furniture dealerships in the metroplex, employing over 30 trained personnel and 50 certified installers in their installation division.
Mary graduated from Texas A&M / Commerce in the mid seventies and started The Spencer Company in 1977 - selling contract furniture to the federal government over a 5 state territory. The company grew each year - always through internal financing - and became more focused on the private sector market in the 80's.
Today the company is a Haworth Preferred Dealer and backs up its strong client relations with total turn-key services, including in-house Computer Aided Design, its own warehouse and full staff of certified trained installers.
"These unique services help us to live up to our motto of understanding our client and their needs so that we can exceed their highest expectations," states Mary.
In addition, Mary has served on Haworth Dealer Council (the company's governing body) and has been awarded the highest recognition for a Haworth dealer - Haworth President's Circle - for the last 10 years.
Mary's strong belief in relationship building spills into many other organizations involving the contribution of much of her time. Still very involved with Texas A&M / Commerce, Mary served on the University's Foundation Board for 8 years. In 1997 she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award at A&M.
Mary is recognized in the Memorial Student Center's Hall of Founder's Lounge and in the Heritage House (which she and her company donated complete design services to create a total interiors package for the restored early 1900's Presidential Home). In 2003, Mary was instrumental in raising over $5,000 for the Chi Omega chapter to redecorate their sorority house. Mary worked diligently throughout the summer to pick colors, furniture and oversee construction, which transformed the house into a beautiful home for the Chi Omegas. In 1996, Mary established the Mary Spencer Chi Omega Scholarship, which is given each semester to a Chi-O active who excels in both scholarship and leadership. Since its inception, 10 scholarships have been awarded - totaling over $5,000 in monetary value.
In 1998, Mary was elected Chairman of the Board for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas (SPCA) in Dallas, where she held the Chairman position for 7 years. Before that time, she served as Secretary of the Board of the SPCA and Capital Campaign Chairperson. During these years, Mary has dedicated much effort and time in promoting awareness for the SPCA throughout the community and was quite instrumental in the design and the development of the SPCA McKinney campus as well as the expansion of the downtown facility.
Mary also rescues and fosters homeless animals - nursing them back to their healthy state before turning them back to the SPCA for placement into the perfect home.
Mary is a graduate of the Leadership Dallas Class of 2001. Through this program, she dedicated time and efforts to the Dallas Youth Village and other programs chosen by the Leadership Dallas class.
Mary recently was elected as Treasurer for the Board of Directors of the World Cranial Foundation -
the organization that was instrumental in separating the conjoined Egyptian twins last year.
In her spare time, Mary is an active member of the First Methodist Church in downtown Dallas. She served as Director of Communications for a recent Capital Campaign and also on the Evangelism committee, where she actively promotes membership and development within the church. Mary also enjoys entertaining and is constantly planning events and theme oriented parties in her home and with the organizations that she is involved in. She loves to read, garden and go to the Mockingbird Dog Park with her "family" of 2 dogs - Libby,
a large black lab and Hattie
The family's Tuxedo cat, Ross who rules the household, is quite happy staying home minding the fort from one of his favorite pillows.
